hannah pool in the gaurdian has a really interesting piece on the October fashion spread in French Vogue. the spread features model lara stone, shot by steven klein, apparently painted up as a black model in various locations of the ‘exotic’. the shots have raised all sorts of debate, namely why a white model was substituted for a black model, cultural imperialism and questions of taste and decency.
Steven klein is undoubtedly one of the most talented, visionary, provocative artists working at the moment, providing rich narrative tapestries for fashion spreads and delightfully surreal shoots for cultural icons, but really…what was he trying to say with this?
