Fashion Show

the real oscars story

really, who cares? it’s all a big political pat on the back. 90% of the time winning films are bloated, overly earnest, A-list juggernauts with tokenistic themes. monsters ball left me in a coma for weeks. the only story is the clothes*. and more to the point, who looked more hideous than who. so below follows a one-line tour through oscars 2010.
oscars 2010 fashion show
zoe saldana – a big givenchy wtf?
diane crugar – glorious in chanel
anna kendrick – hard to distinguish between dress and person
carey mulligan – i thought i was edgy, but a frock covered in cutlery? too poor-boy-done-good for me.
amanda seyfried – armani prive, tea-stained first year fash student experiment
vera farminga – blooming lovely, marchesa
SJP – dazzling, although living a lie (Karl Lagerfeld couture- was told it was made especially) deja vu
nicole richie – reem achra, holy mother of witches of eastwick, total regression
maggie gyllenhal- dries van noten, paint-by-numbers dressing, only 2 hours to dry, ideal for any show-stopping event
mariah carey – whats the point
sandra bullock – suprisingly beautiful marchesa. miss congeniality obviously paid off
charlize theron – john galliano, papier mache drag queen get-up
mo’nique – more fitting on top of a wedding cake
penelope cruz – must try harder
rachel mcadams – divine
meryl streep – masterclass in sophisticated understatement
kate winslet – oh dear
cameron diaz – fell asleep mid comment
demi moore – beautiful and on-trend, must be cougar season
miley cyrus – a palatable christmas tree fairy
jennifer lopez – polysterene and proud, at least she offered up a talking point
sigourney weaver- suitably heroic, channeling aliens II
kristen stewart – made an effort

polystyrene and proud

wtf?

chanelling aliens heroism

* earlier grammatical mistake now corrected – honestly, there was a conflab in the office for about 10 minutes as to whether story is singular or plural…highly embarrassing.

debate encouraged on this post. some may say my comments are not detailed enough.

Haven’t had a chance to have a good gawp at what was on offer this year. However, did catch a quick glimpse of Meryl Streep on the news bulletin last night and Oh My God Oh My God Oh My God, she is the QUEEN. I love her all over again.

  • Fidelma

You overlooked Queen Helen Mirren. Now that’s a class act! I want to be her when I’m 40….oh wait, too late :-(

And are you being ultra pc not to offer an snark opinion on Gabe Sidibe?

indeed, she is truly sumptuous here. i mean it won’t be going down in the history books or ‘owt, but by god, if i looked half as classy or half as slick as she does, i’d be twice as happy. it’s just very elegant, very understated – almost self-deprecating, very feminine and very flattering.

  • jenniemc

you are right on helen mirren – i did indeed overlook her, but it’s because she is always a sartorial step above the rest. i mean that bikini shot from last year – she is in another league altogether. and you are correct again on sidibe – was it that obvious? i just noted that a lot of fashion people were commenting on how wonderful she looked and how well she accessorized and i thought it was just too patronising. i didn’t think she looked that great or that the dress was particularly flattering, but i didn’t want to make a deal out of it, so i guess im as bad as the lip-servicing fashion insiders…she is equally worthy of critical comment as is the uber-skinny saldana.

I’m on team Meryl and the Dame Mirren! They both dressed entirely appropriately, classic hollywood glamour. I loved Miley whatsit’s dress but as usual, it was far to old for her and didn’t fit her properly at all. (dress your age Miley). Loved Maggie Gyllenhall’s too, young, sophisticated and quirky!
The rest, meh really. (A sweeping statement but the stand-out ones made the others disappear). Tres disappointed in Winslet, but she can’t nail it every time, it’s humanly impossible, I would sack her stylist if I were her though, I’ve never seen Kate look so naff.

  • jenniemc

i believe that was the exact word i was looking for when trying to describe winslet, but it evaded me. aideen too concurred that there was nothing really spectacular this year – i think an overall ‘meh’ can sum up oscars 2010. gyllenhall was indeed quirky, but for me i didn’t dig it on the red carpet, but fair play for renouncing the flounce and the black.

totally agree with comments about meryl streep she just gets it so effortlessly right all the time cannot agree about sjp, the hair and make up are highlighting the ‘gaunt’ look (which i personally think is so over). i wonder does karl lagerfield know that she has already has the twins? or maybe theres some other reason for all that extra material that only karl and sarah-jessica know about hmm…? maybe shes going without the surrogate?

  • anne

and as for mariah carey she actually looked better dressed as the social worker in ‘precious’.
