Why Jedward?

I am not a fan of Jedward. There, I said it. No doubt to a backdrop of shocked silences, a chorus of tut tuts and a wave of nodding heads. I just don’t ‘get’ them. What is their purpose? What are they for? Every time I see a performance, I cringe at the stunning naivete, the collusion in national exploitation and the truly staggering lack of talent. They can’t sing, they can’t dance, they can barely string a sentence together when being interviewed; they don’t have any sense of irony, humour or comedic timing and by god, that hairstyle is just woejus.  And I feel a leetle awkward about the slightly homoerotic posing that always seems to sneak into any Jedward fashion shoot. This one is in the Guardian, where the two teens have been dressed up in Prada and Burberry and Martin Margiela, and have the dreamily intense posing of a couple in lust.

Although I do like the campaign, the styling and the lighting, I’m just a little perplexed as to why the undertone, between each other. The boys did a shoot for Grazia magazine last year, and although with less intonation, there is still a subtle homo-eroticism in the shoot. Regardless, I’m just not buying into the Jedward hype machine, and despite both shoots being very slick, I still just wanna know: why Jedward?

Why Jedward? Because this country has an obsessive fascination with the trivial and the amateur – the 10 yr success of Big Brother and Bruce Forsyth’s career are testament enough to this.

As for the homoeroticism – this is fashion gays just projecting many of the dirty thoughts homos have about teenage males, twin brothers and more specifically gay twin brothers i.e have they ever copped off with each other? No big mystery – straights fantasize about twin girls, gays fantasize about twin boys.

I’d say you really don’t get Jedward – they have sense of humour, irony and comedic timing in bundles – evident for all to see in X Factor, their amazing live shows, epic use of Twitter, and interviews (if the questions are intelligent enough). John and Edward are also inspirational role models for all generations when it comes to hard work, positive energy and determination to outclass their critics. Fashion really is too small a world for their expression to thrive imo although they are on record as saying they’ll try anything.

I agree with comments made by Jane.

Strong singers they are not, but they have proved their entertainment value, not only by their sell-out tour and dedicated following, but by transforming ´haters´ at more mixed concert venues who couldn´t help but be impressed with their ability to energise the audience and simply have fun. I am one of the first to appreciate talent and a good vocal as well as being one of the first to be as tired as you probably are of the many mundane acts like Cheryl Cole etc (who I believe are talentless) yet dominate the charts making fortunes while talented musicians remain busking and pennyless.

However I do not group Jedward in this category, because I do believe they are talented. They don´t have the strongest of vocals, but have an innate ability to perform and entertain – and there is a space in the business for the entertainer too – it is not an ability that I believe can easily be learned, and it is something that we all enjoy. Does it matter if their vocals are not first rate if everyone comes back from a concert having had a great time and feeling they got value for the money they paid?

As for the modelling side of things, they are both beautiful boys in my opinion and extremely photogenic – and as much as there are plenty pretty people in the modelling world, theres not that many that produce the kind of shots I´ve seen from them, especially when they´re together. I´d go as far as to say some are like a work of art – and this is from two teenagers with no previous experience. The photographers themselves have commented and complimented the boys too on how easy they were to photograph and how naturally they were able to pose, and how impressed they were with the quality of shots.

As for what it represents – its subjective and is in the eye of the beholder.
The boys have an incredible loving bond with each other – its no surprise that this could be picked up by the camera, in fact maybe its what adds to the photo. But I don´t think its bad. It looks beautiful to me.

    Why Jedward? Why not?

PS Get your eyes tested. It’s modern day Caravaggio.

no you really don’t get john and edward at all.
You have to be willing to meet jedward in their world and once you do it’s a happy place full of love, laughter, music and dancing.
I find their honesty, enthusiasm, positivity and give anything a try attitude truly inspiring.
Seriously there are worse people out there more deserving of your scorn than these two hard working lads who are simply a joy to be around.

i’m indifferent to this pairing but i’m impressed with the shoot, thank god those hairstyles were smoothed down.

they cant hold down an interview without saying ”em like..yeah like….” they are NOT funny! seriously…

  • Elle

Even if you don’t get their appeal as performers (many are converted after seeing them live onstage by the way ;) you have to admit they’re pretty good at this whole modelling thing, especially for two kids who’ve been doing it for barely a few months. And I really don’t see anything unusually homoerotic about these pictures lol – yes it’s there, but nothing more than any other similar shoot; plus we all love a bit of that don’t we? ;) It’s a pretty fantasy, someone’s just playing up to it – and I say, keep on!

  • Lel

Because of their little smooth faces, tidy cheekbones and THAT hair.
But then again I think teenage boys are beautiful- like little smooth skinned men-children.
It’s only when they start speaking that the illusion is shattered. SHATTERED!!

I think that the gayness of Jedward is the fascination . The deluded young men with pretty femine faces without any male tell tale signs. The absolute rubbish of today is no doubt Jedward. Young boys who if they were ugly wouldnt have the hearts of all the gays and young teenage girls racing. I dont get them either. I would put them into the same category of Jordan, katona, Paris and all those people who make money and actually have no talent. I believe they copy all their quotes from internet sites and cant play guitar ripping off youtube guitar solos and are releasing a bland album of covers which no doubt will be forgotten in a years time. i dont get them either but lots of people do but not enough to take them seriously

  • Salvador

they remind me of the Hortoneda twins.

  • jenniemc

guys i acquiesce, i didn’t develop a bond with them throughout their time in the public eye, so maybe i am missing some of their more charming merits. i didn’t mean to offend anyone, but i still think there is more of a cynical marketing ploy at hand here rather than genuine talent. although i am willing to see them perform live if anyone wants to throw me free tickets? one thing i did not criticize was their good looks – they definitely have model features and the shoot looked fantastic

  • Jade

Why Jedward? Because they’re gorgeous – look at them? Can you say they are not modelling material? Also, don’t all male models look gay? The fashion industry isn’t exactly filled to the brim with tesosterone is it.

Models do what they are asked. If the photographer wants homoeroticism then she’ll/he’ll get homoeroticism.

Twins have a natural love for each other anyway (non-sexual of course) so what’s the problem. Their music career and musical talent has nothing to do with modelling to which they are great at. You have the proof of that already.
