The Great Débutante Debacle

If you have ever been Debs Dress shopping you will understand the unbearable pain that is scrummaging through shops and towns trying to find a dress that doesn’t look like it was made in a factory that only manufactures silk, velour and bright colours. But is it only me who sees this nationwide problem? I have looked in a total of about 40 shops and still no luck. They are all: too colourful, too Euro-trash, too revealing and too much of an eyesore to even look at, let alone actually wear. My first experience of this horrible task took place on a cold, miserable (of course!) Saturday morning. I awoke with a throbbing headache (most likely because of the alcohol I had consumed the night before) and met with a friend who stank of ‘first-time debs shopper’ enthusiasm. Oh how the mighty will fall. We made our way up to Dublin only to be greeted by one atrocity after another. In the 6 hours we spent shopping, I think only one dress stood out for me -  a simple, royal-blue, floral beach dress! Maybe its the collections at this time of year or maybe I just need to hop on the sparkly satin bandwagon or maybe it was a simple case of THTT (too hungover too try). If anyone has suggestions of great, fantastic, and/or magical shops that only stock beautiful dresses, fitted to my exact size please let me know. Failing that, if anyone would like two tickets to the debs please don’t hesitate to contact me!

And these were some of the nicest…seriously!

Lorna.

Yesterday in TKMaxx Cork there was a spectacular BCBG gown, a champagne colour, beautiful detailing! If you watch Gossip Girl then think of the famous Marchesa Blair prom dress now in a lighter colour and shorter. It’s just one colour, where Blair’s was two but it has the same detailing down one side. It was just below my knee when I (of course) tried it on! It was an amazing dress!

I got mine three years ago in Rococo, off Grafton St. It was quite simple, old hollywood kind of style.

  • grace

ooh.sounds quite similar to my own debs dress..a champagne coloured BCBG number..floor-length, one shouldered, intricate pleating across bust..do you dare lorna?!

I was in Kildare Village today and they have some gorgeous (and I mean really gorgeous) dresses, suitable for debs and, well, living (which are always the main indicators I look for…)

WardobeWars – that sounds like a winner (champagne is always a winner) – and yes Grace, does sound very similar to yours…but (Batman interlude)…will Lorna make it to Cork on time? Will the Penguin succeed in his dastardly plans to take down Robin? Tune in next week.
Rosemary and Aimeé – do you remember the panic you felt when you were right there in the thick of debs shopping? Your sense of perspective gets completely distorted and it’s so difficult to extrapolate the good and the bad from the ugly. Once upon a time when I had my debs, I got my dress made to order with the exact specs…and yet I HATED it the night I wore it. Then the headmistress told me I had an absolutely stunning dress – I felt conflicted after that comment. Should the headmistress like your dress? Is that really a stylistic kudos? Anyway, 9 years since I made my debs…and now I love my dress…

Nope. unfortunately fiona I still haven’t found one! To be perfectly honest I’m a lot more comfortable living in my own naive little world and thinking the dress will find me (as of yet, it hasn’t). But we’re heading over to Birmingham this week for Sarah’s graduation so hopefully I’ll find something there. Fingers crossed. P.s Do let me know if you find one!
