Harajuku Girls: Not so crazy afterall?

Womens Wear Daily found themselves on the streets of Toykyo recently and discovered a whole slew of young ladies who eschew the Harajuku style. The ubiquitous Harajuku way of dressing embraces manga, anime, surreal fantasy and hyperactive colour palettes. The city is synonymous with Power Puff and Hello Kitty street style, and girls dressed up as boys dressed up as girls dressed up as superhero characters. Turns out though, that loads of ladies just fancy a bit of pure, unadulterated (and unadorned) fashion. In the traditional sense. They go casual during the day and throw on a bit of fancy at night. They follow trends and take inspiration from the runways. The Sartorialist also managed to find some candidates that had a more ‘conservative’ approach to fashion.

I read this on WWD too… The interviews are really telling of how small the world is in terms of fashion influence. It also reeeeealy makes me want to go to Tokyo.

yeah totally, and yet it is quite amazing how people can interpret things differently. not all the time of course, but when they do, it makes such a huge impact, when you think we’re all reading and absorbing the same material, that one person who can dramatically re-imagine a look – that’s true style eh?

WWD – bit disappointing, never enough news on it in my mind.

I travelled in Japan a couple of years ago and spent a month hanging out in Tokyo. I discovered pretty quickly that the Harajuku thing is mostly for the cameras. The kids all gather on the bridge and just sit around looking either mean or cute depending on the particular angle they’re going for and wait for people to ask to take their picture. They even bring packed lunches in their little mini suitcases so they can keep their spot for the whole day. The main shopping street in Harajuku (Takeshita Street) is really just for the tourists also.

I do love that although the trends in Tokyo are much tamer than we are led to believe, the presence of the more extreme styles mean that the mainstream has much more flexibility and room for creativity than we have here. I bought lots of things that were perfectly normal in Tokyo that I never wore when I got home because I realised on the streets of Belfast I just wouldn’t get away with it.
