Well unfortunately this year we missed out on our tickets to New York fashion week (some of you might recall our fluke encounter with a certain Ms Kelly Cutrone and our admittance into a certain Alexandre Herchcovitch show last year…where we brushed shoulders with our buds Kanye and Anna and the likes. If not check it out here!) but na bi buartha, I’ve kept a critical eye on the goings on across the pond and here’s my pick of the best trends and collections…
One of the bigger trends across the catwalk was the new updated and more streamlined version of ethnic chic. Rodarte presented a more grown-up hippy that merged an organic attitude with clean lines and sharp cuts. Rich wintery fabrics were lightened and brightened to create a new angle for spring. Others designers which followed this trend were Badgley Mischka, Yigal Azrouel and Bensoni.
Next up Vera Wang showed a beautiful and controlled draping and experimentation of fabrics. Her tougher oriental theme was unique and refreshing. Complexgeometries also showed a controlled application of fabrics but with a youthful minimalistic twist.
Designers like Derek Lam, Peter Som and Halston presented a richer minimalism feel in their collections. Voluptuous shapes and interesting fabrics were used with clean cuts and lines to create a more wearable and relaxed simplicity.
Alexander Wang and Thakoon kept their collections light and airy, focusing largely on a fresh white palette and focusing on the cut and detail. A sporty attitude provided a youthful and original twist.
And finally Victoria Beckham presented a collection of her signature dresses, always well-fitted and classic, however not particularly fashion ground breaking. She did however present two dresses that nod at all of the upcoming trends while still retaining her quintessential ladylike charm.
