Cartoon-themed-clothing: The Assault

Yes, it was kinda cool as a first year college student to have a t-shirt with the Muppets or the Care Bears emblazoned on the front. Kinda. Now with Katy Perry and Lady Gaga informing stylistic sensibilities, we have seen an explosion of highly unflattering, cartoon-themed clothing. And it’s Just Not Cool Anymore. Perry has been captured in a Hello Kitty corset, a Muppet-themed prom dress and was recently snapped celebrating in some sort of Southpark bodystocking contraption. In a word: TERRIFYING.

Not attractive in the slightest. In fact, Katy Perry is a one-stop cartoon-crime shop. Who else has championed this unseemly look? Gaga has donned a Kermit the Frog cape, Kelly Osbourne was spotted in a Jeremy Scott Flintstone style outfit and Marina (Marina and the Diamonds) wore a bizarre-looking hippo dress to a T4 gig. Fun, frivolous, kitschy, cute? Perhaps. But it is also downright U-G-L-Y.

Let me tell you why. All that gimmicky stuff; that freedom of expression, that playfulness…well it always sacrifices form over function. The point of these cartoon-themed creations is to celebrate the cartoon in question – not the body, or the celebrity wearing it. Cue too-tight jumpsuits and tent-style dresses. I get fun. I get creativity. I get personal expression.  But the cartoon stuff? Well it’s all gone a bit Pete Tong really.
