Curl up and Dye they aint!

Sharmadean

You may remember a few weeks ago myself and Jennie toddled on down to the Barry’s Tea with… WAH nails and Beaut.ie. The founder of WAH nails, Sharmadean Reid, was in town to open her first Irish nail counter (in Harvey Nicks) but also to have a yak about how the business started. I came away feeling completely inadequate. She’s only 26 and has achieved so much already! Not only that but she’s what Kelly Cutrone would call a Tribal Elder. Someone who people can look up to and who’s really into giving something back to the community.

Sharmadean’s salon in Dalston, East London is not just a nail bar but a salon in the 18th century sense of the world. A place where people can get together and discuss issues, sexual politics and whatnot. I just love it! We need this here.

Aaaaanyway. The reason why I’m bringing all this back up again is because Sharmadean shares her salon space with Bleach London. Bleach is a hair salon which is all about the atypical. (Above is a pic of Sharmadean sporting a Bleach do)

Anyone who read the Sunday Times Style Magazine last week may have seen the article in which they featured. I can’t link to it cos the Times has a freakin’ paywall but below is a scanned picture I nabbed from Bleach’s blog. Gives you a better idea of the type of do they do.

Sam Teasdale from Bleach

Bleach is run by Sam Teasdale (featured above) and Alex Brownswell who is a session stylist for Dazed and Confused and i-D magazine. How about that for street cred eh?

I feel I may now have to start an email campaign beseeching them to follow Sharmadean’s lead and set up shop over here. I have no doubt there’s a market for their trade. I’d nearly try and set one up myself except I’ve no talent for hairstyling.

I haven’t had blue hair since I was in sixth year, but this resurgence of colour has gotten me all excited. And lets face it, between the storms and the big R, a little bit of colour in our lives, both physically and metaphorically, would be very welcome no?
