Sorry for our absence over the last week. Work, birthdays, flat-hunting and raging against the machine that is Nationwide Controlled Parking Systems has made for a stressful few days.
Something that tipped us over the edge here at WWIWT is a certain letter from RTE. Maybe ye’ve read about it already on Beaut.ie.
Aisling articulated pretty succinctly how we here on this blog are feeling about RTE Fashion’s email.
Basically they made contact with a number of blogs pitching the idea that they could use our content as part of an aggregated feed. That means you could go to a page they set up and see our latest blog entries, amongst many others. Supposedly they’re ‘showcasing’ the best of Irish fashion and beauty blogs, and that it’d be great exposure for us. But actually it doesn’t mean any meaningful extra traffic to our site. What it DOES mean is that we help RTE line their pockets with money made from advertising. Do we get a cut of that? Well if you read RTE’s response to Beaut.ie in the comments, it looks very unlikely.
Lookit, we’ve done things for free before, of course. Show me a blogger who hasn’t and I’ll give you a tenner. We expect PR companies and the like to approach us looking for us to work for nothing. But we certainly don’t expect the national broadcaster, a media heavyweight, a unionised, semi-state company to do so.
And what’s particularly hilarious (because if you don’t laugh you’ll cry), is that they’ve insulted our intelligence by thinking we would go for it.
Well, no. No, thank you.
