So it’s been the coldest August on record. That’s not news to most of you out there but it IS official according to Met Eireann. June was the coldest in 40 years and August the coolest since records began in 1851. I suppose it could be worse, the last three summers have been a washout, so at least it was slightly drier in 2011. God it really does leave you with an overwhelming sense of meh (a paradox, I know!).
Cold as it was, it’s still possible to wear little jackets and blazers. There’s no real dress code where I work but on the days I’m out reporting, I do have to do the whole smart casual thing. So blazers are my go-to look. But now that you can feel the chill creeping in, I’m soon going to have to wear something heavier. Therein lies the rub. How do you wear blazers once it’s time to wear proper coats again?
Blazers are too big around the shoulders to jam under a coat. If you try, they get all creased and your armpits feel like they’ve been stuffed with duvets. Remember that episode of Friends when Joey’s girlfriend kept punching him so he wore 6 jumpers at a time? Yeah. It’s not a good look is it?
Now I know you can buy nice thin jumpers in H&M, A Wear and Penneys. But you can’t layer up too much or the duvet-around-the-armpits becomes you once again. Plus, even with a scarf, it’s not heavy enough to take the place of your coat/jacket. Not only that, but the light fabrics don’t look good with scarves. Not proper warm ones anyway.
What do you guys do? Have you got some tricks you can share with me? Or do you simply put the blazers to the back of the wardrobe once the Autumnal breezes get a bit much? Do tell…
PS please excuse the terrible hair and bad lighting (see point about the weather!). God it was a bad hair day. I didn’t mean to inflict it on the world. Time for a cut!
