What Will I Wear Today Contributor, Aideen Finnegan, talks about the upcoming leather trend for Autumn/ Winter 2012, with a specific focus on leather skirts.
Apparently you should invest 10% of your portfolio in precious metal. We’re told gold keeps going up and up in price. But platinum’s yer only man apparently, even if this is its first extended run playing second fiddle in value to gold…
What the fock are these people talking about? Have they been living under a rock? It’s leather is where it’s at this season – BLACK LEATHER!
And it is a good investment, lads. Give me a decade when black leather wasn’t cool and I’ll give you a tenner! You shouldn’t feel bad about splashing out on the good stuff either… so long as you can fit into it, you can wear it til the cows come home. (Lovely leather-yielding cows!)
Where last year the trend may have been gothic and fussy, this year’s leather on the catwalk is structured, minimalist and broody. Alexander Wang’s doing it, Loewe is doing it, and Azzedine Alaïa is positively having a shit-fit over it.
My personal favourite twist on the trend? The black leather skater skirt. Currently I’m LOVING my Emma Manley Boxter skirt. There are a million ways to wear it – at the moment I’m tucking a baggy top in so it looks nice and cinched at the waist. Add a slick of liquid liner and some majestic heels, and you’ve a very Dublin-Friday-Night-

Sunday Times Style Magazine fans might have noticed the team are fawning over Gestuz’s version of the skater. But Manley’s skirt was part of her A/W ’11 collection, so I reckon she was first with it. And she’s Irish – I’d much rather support local designers instead of the Danish label. Sorry Denmark.
